This morning the 20th of May, Thailand military declared Martial Law, which was announced publically this morning on military run television. The Thai military have taken over all national security issues; the current care taker government still exists with care taker Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan. The decision to bring on martial law was not however discussed with the current care taker prime minister in advance.
The military have stated that, the martial law has been invoked ‘to restore peace and order for people from all sides’ and stressed that this is not a move towards a coup. 'The public do not need to panic but can still live their lives as normal,' it added.
The lead up to today’s imposition is the dismissal of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra in a controversial court decision earlier this month, which was following months of escalating tension between the government and the opposition.
The risk of today’s decision of imposing martial law is that it will be seen as a step towards a coup by the government’s supporters, which could enrage them further. The ‘Red Shirt’ supporters of the dismissed prime minister have warned of the treat of civil war if power is handed to an unelected leader, which is what the opposition are demanding.
