Australia’s current terror threat level is High, raised from Medium earlier this month. On September 18, over 800 police officers took part in Australia’s largest counter terrorism operations in Sydney and Brisbane, which ended with one arrest of a man who is alleged to be preparing to commit a terror act.
Now, 30th September, there was another anti-terror raid in Australia, this time Melbourne suburbs were the locations. This morning Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police conducted anti-terror raids in five Melbourne suburbs, including Flemington, Seabrook, Meadow Heights, Broadmeadows and Kealba. One man has been taken in to custody at Seabrook. The raids are believed to be based on terrorism financing, and Premier Napthine has stated that there is certainly no immediate threat to public safety. The 23 year old man from Seabrook will be charged with allegedly providing $12,000 to a SU citizen fighting in Syria. "I can confirm a 23-year-old man from Seabrook will be charged with intentionally making funds available to a terrorist organisation knowing that organisation was a terrorist organisation," Assistant Commissioner Gaughan said. The tip off about the man came from the FBI.
These raids come a week after an 18 year old terror suspect was shot by police at the Endeavour Hills police station, after he stabbed two police officers. Though, Police have stated that today’s raids are not related to this incident.
